Thought I would just throw this out there. Look to this thread for any updates.
This morning, (Sunday, 3/12) around 8:00, strong winds and possible tornadoes hit North Lawrence and the Reno KS area. Leavenworth weather service is reporting one person is missing and corn stalks are falling from the sky in the Reno area.
I wouldn't want to live in the Northern half of Mizzou and Southern half of Illini today, as they are under High Risk, the first of the year. They are forecasting long track tornadoes today.

Guys, if you live just east of ICT and in Eastern Kansas, you should check this link out. The dry line stalled, and now is moving, making the serious weather just east of us.

The Dryline's already buzzed through ICT, that's why we now have storms blowing up in Cowley Co.
I'll be "cyberchasing" this afternoon. These storms will be out of our viewing area by the time they are too severe. Plus, they will be racing between 40 to 60 mph, which makes it VERY difficult to chase.
And, I have a couple of business meetings this afternoon, so I'll be watching the weather from the CPU, not the truck!

Looks like it's going to be Thursday, Mar. 30th if things hold together and the storm system doesn't slow down. They must be a lil' worried if they asked me to keep my schedule open for Thursday 4-5 days in advance. I'll let you know.

Mar 27 2006, 01:55 PM
A lil' more info. Yes, the PROS ARE getting very worried about Thursday. There's a storm system way off to our west, and it's tracking this direction. Depending on the timing of the dry line and the cold front, things could get ugly. HOWEVER, the one saving grace we may have is cloud cover. Thursday morning, IF the clouds don't BURN off in the morning, and allow the atmosphere to "steam" up, then we shouldn't have to worry about severe weather. So, if it stays cloudy Thur., we'll be okay. If it doesn't...well...I'm going to be busy!

Rumor has it there will be isolated Thunder Storms near 85th and Hydraulic on Friday and Saturday evenings. Better keep your schedule open for those times as well.

Actually, I'll be encouraging ThunderStorms Fri. and Sat. around that area!
However, they are forecasting the possibilities of severe weather for Saturday!
Things have changed for this week, like I thought it might. NOW, it looks like S. Central and SW Kansas will "possibly" get some SVR WXR Wed. evening and overnight. And Thursday now looks like a squall line event.
So now, we might have tornadic stuff Wed. Nt., and fierce winds in front of storms on Thur. Nt.
OF COURSE, this could all change since it is still 1-2 days away. I'm not holding my breath.

As usual, things have changed.
Storms in W. Kansas could be severe this evening, with MAYBE, an isolated Tornado here and there. But, nothing to worry about here. However, tonight/early morning, we could probably expect a squall line to roll through the ICT area.
Then, it will clear up, and another Round of WXR will probably move through Thur. afternoon. So now, the focus is on tomorrow.
Well, I guess I outta get out there and mow my damn yard!

There is a moderate risk of severe storms along and east of Highways 81/135/35. Right now, SPC just issued a mesoscale discussion advising of a possible watch being issued around 9am. As storms develop, they should contain large hail and then a tornado threat will become more likely by afternoon. By then, those storms will probably be well east of ICT.
Like I said, it's going to be a late morning/early afternoon event, so keep yourself updated with local media. This will be my last report, as I am heading out to set up.

I just got off the phone with icelane. He asked me to tell ya'll that the National weather service in Wichita and the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK. is now VERY concerned about So. Central Kansas. They are now predicting significant tornadic activity for our area. It shoud be in the Pratt/Kingman area around 12:30 and crossing I-135 about 3PM. They are very concerned, so keep and eye out and be carefull today.

What a long day.
That's the earliest I've ever had to chase! I left ICT for the Wellington area at 9:15 this morning! Are you kiddin' me?
Yes, we needed the sun block for awhile there, but today's junk made me feel like a DARN ping-pong ball. Wellington, then Argonia, then Andover, then Greenwood Co., then...ah, never mind.
We got extremely lucky, today. If the cloud cover this morning had burned off, and allowed the sun to heat things up a bit...We would have had a repeat of what happened in Missouri a few weeks ago... We dodged a bullet.
The worst thing I chased was slight rotation down in Argonia. Not enough rotation to put out a warning. It was the same system that hit W. SG Co. and W. Wichita.
Next round of weather? Slight chance Saturday, but a better chance on Sunday.

Here's the latest on today's SVR WXR potential. It looks like the worst stuff's going to be in SW and possibly Central Kansas. By the time it gets here, we could be enjoying a good ol' hockey game. When it does get here, right now, it looks like we'll get strong winds and potentially large hail. Tornados? Probably not, but there's always a small chance.
There is still a moderate risk of severe weather. It now covers an area to just west of Dodge City, then east to Wichita, and as far north as St. John and Jetmore. Tornadoes, Large Hail and Damaging Winds are the threats. Widespread severe storms are possible today. When storms move into the metro area look for very large hail and damaging winds to accompany the storms.
Looks like a late evening to overnight issue for us in central and eastern KS. Wichita weather service is saying the best potential for tornadoes is in central KS.
Here are a couple of links if you are interested.

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/yesterday.htmlWe were lucky it wasnt worse. I live in Middle Tennessee wich didnt get the worst of it but a 'radar indicated' tornado passed about five miles from where I live. The weather reporters were pretty convinced it was on the ground from what they could see with there radars, but as far as I know there were no visual confirmations(this was around midnight and spotting in Tennesee is much different than Kansas). But it is a great fear of mine that a strong F4 or F5 hits a populated area of Tennessee. Basements here are actually fairly uncommon and you can take all the precautions in the world, like a closet or interior room but if you dont have a basement or a safe room, your in danger.

THIS IS IMPORTANT!
For those fans of ours who live in NE Kansas, from Salina, North into Nebraska, east to Kansas City, south to Chanute, then up to Emporia, BE AWARE OF THE WEATHER. (Especially are Topeka friends. I've already called a few to tell them "heads up.")
This is the first time this year that a portion of the state of Kansas is under a HIGH RISK situation. When the Storm Prediction Center puts one these out, it's going to be a nasty day. They very rarely set up a High Risk area.
Feel free to check the link below, and don't forget to move your mouse over the "Tornado" tab at the top. You will then see what the percentages are for tordadoes in the state. Also, through the day, go back and check the same address, then click on "Mesodiscussions." Right before or while storms are going up, the Mesodiscussions will post maps with where the severe weather is going to be. It's a great tool to use!
Wichita? We are on the Moderate Line, which means we will probably see some pretty strong storms. I haven't been called yet with Details, but I have been told to be in Salina by no later than noon, today. So, the station know the "you know what" is going to hit the fan.
Here's the link.

Here is the e-mail I received from the Weather Department at KWCH.
"It looks as if the storm system has slowed down some and therefore the threat for severe weather has shifted back to the west."
"Of most importance, as of 8am, a high risk of severe weather is expected east of a Concordia to Salina to Marion to Eureka line. A moderate risk of severe is east of a Lincoln to Ellsworth to Hutch and Wichita to Wellington line. A slight risk runs east of a Phillipsburg to Russell to Great Bend to Medicine Lodge line. Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a major severe weather outbreak today. The most likely area for the tornadic storms is in the high risk area. Looking at some new data, it looks like the low will track thru NC KS where tornadoes should develop east and/or NE of the low."
I guess they aren't joking.
So, Salina....Here I come!

Should the fact that Topeka is sitting right smack in the middle of every one of the damn circles on that website concern me?
I never ask for severe weather, but please - if it has to hit Topeka - break a few windows out of my house. We are getting ready to replace them anyway, and I'm not opposed to letting my homeowners insurance pay for a few of them.

You've obviously never played softball with me. All I would end up accomplishing is breaking out the windows of my neighbors when I miss my house (plus probably hurting myself trying to run back in the house when they come out to see which neighborhood kid just broke their window).

I ended up chasing the stuff NE of Salina. The storms were moving so fast, it was difficult to stay with them. Got some decent video, and saw the first tornado, but I was too far away to confirm a touchdown. Clay Center got smacked along with a few smaller communities in Clay Co. Saw the damage first hand. We had chasers down in SE Kansas, but I don't know if they kept up with the chase that far east where Chetopa Kansas had a direct hit with 12 people injured. You guys should have seen Salina. When I was tracking the storm, and flying up I-135 on the west side of town, you could distinctly see a large white sheet of hail falling on Salina, and yet, it was barely raining on the Interstate! I wish I would have had time to video tape it. What a sight.
And Kev, Topeka dodged a couple of bullets. It was all to the Northwest of Shawnee Co. But, it was close! Manhattan also, had a close call.
The Storm Prediction Center nailed the forecast, yesterday. That's good to see.
Unfortunately, I got to listen to the game on my way back, last night. I hope we can get things turned around tonight.
Next potential severe weather threat? This coming Tuesday.
